Eyewear Care & Ultrasonic Cleaning
Ultrasonic Cleaners for Glasses: Pros and Cons at a Glance
Ultrasonic cleaning is contact-free, thorough and fast – but it isn't the right solution for every situation. An honest weigh-up before you decide to buy one.
The advantages
- Contact-free, so no mechanical scratch risk from friction.
- Reaches hinges, nose pads and the finest grooves that a cloth never reaches.
- Fast: 180 seconds instead of minutes of wiping.
- No ongoing consumption of disposable wipes or cleaning sprays.
The disadvantages
- Upfront cost: higher than a microfibre cloth or a bottle of cleaning spray.
- Tied to one location: you need the device on hand, it's not an on-the-go solution.
- Needs power and water – for a quick clean while out and about, a microfibre cloth stays more practical.
- Not suitable for all materials (see Ultrasonic cleaners for jewellery and watches for limitations on other objects).
Who benefits most from buying one?
For anyone using their glasses intensively on a daily or multiple-times-weekly basis (sport, customer-facing jobs), the purchase pays for itself quickly compared to recurring spend on cleaning sprays and cloths – see also Benefits of clean glasses beyond hygiene.
